The HP LaserJet M1120 MFP is a black and white laser all-in-one printer and is designed for the home and small business user. The printer uses the HP CB436A toner cartridge, otherwise known as the HP 36A and is available as an original toner ink cartridge or as remanufactured toner ink.
The all-in-one printers have by far out-shone the sales of single function printers in the inkjet cartridge market but have been slower to make an impact in the laser printer market. HP began to address this issue and for those of us used to working with small and compact inkjet based all-in-one printers, the LaserJet M1120 MFP is physically a lot bigger. The laser mechanics in the lower section of the printer means it takes up quite a bit more room than an inkjet by comparison, but the printer has a stable look about it with its grey columns down either side. The versatile and easily obtained HP CB436A ink and toner is widely available locally and on-line. The toner ink output of the toner cartridge is approximately 2000 pages at 5% coverage.
The large 250 page paper tray also has a 10 sheet multipurpose tray. HP refers to this as a priority tray and this is positioned above the standard paper tray. This can be a useful as you may quite often need to load more than one sheet of a particular weight or paper finish at one time. The paper feeds out to what can be described as a balcony that projects from about half way up the laser printer. This printer is extremely good at operating in an office where there are a lot of mono reports required and the remanufactured HP 36A toner cartridge certainly can prove good value for money. Above the output tray is the flatbed scanner section and this hinges upwards – allowing access to the laser toner ink and the drum cartridge. The scanner is supported by spring hinges, so it will stay in place when it is open without danger of falling shut. On top of the printer is an LCD display – without backlight – and a set of eight buttons which, though a little old fashioned, are enough to control the printer functions. No indicator as far as we can tell, to inform you of toner and ink levels. At the back of the printer, the only connection is a USB 2 socket and unfortunately there are no internal options for a network interface.
However, there is a network version of this machine available at a cost of about £20 more. There are many single and two pack offers on the CB 436A ink and toner for this printer available on-line. Many of these offers also include free delivery and same day dispatch. The all-in-one laser printer is an attractive option when buying the printer because of the extra features such as the scanner but it is important to check the cost of running the printer ink with toner ink as this will be one of the biggest outlays that you will have to make. The HP Laserjet M1120 MFP will generally accept the remanufactured HP 36A toner without any issues, however, from time to time it may be necessary to remove the toner ink cartridge from the printer to clean the contacts with a soft cloth to remove any static and help the printer recognise the laser print toner cartridge.
